The Sempaya Hot Springs—Semuliki National Park, Uganda

The Sempaya Hot Springs are the most famous attraction in Semuliki National Park, located in western Uganda near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. These natural geothermal springs are surrounded by lush tropical rainforest and are among Uganda’s most fascinating natural wonders.

The springs are divided into two distinct sites:

Male Hot Spring (Bintente)

The Male Hot Spring, locally known as Bintente, is the larger and more dramatic of the two. It shoots boiling water nearly 2 meters (6.5 feet) into the air through a natural geyser-like opening. The water reaches temperatures close to 100°C (212°F), making it hot enough to boil eggs and bananas in just a few minutes. A well-maintained wooden boardwalk allows visitors to safely observe this remarkable geothermal feature while enjoying the surrounding rainforest.

Female Hot Spring (Nyasimbi)

The Female Hot Spring, known as Nyasimbi, is located about a 30-minute walk from the Male Hot Spring. Unlike the powerful eruption of Bintente, Nyasimbi bubbles gently from the ground and is considered a sacred site by the local Bamaga people. According to local folklore, the spring is believed to possess spiritual significance and has long been associated with traditional beliefs and cultural ceremonies.

Wildlife and Birdlife Around the Springs

The forest surrounding the hot springs is rich in biodiversity. During the walk, visitors may spot:

• Red-tailed Monkeys
• Grey-cheeked Mangabeys
• Olive Baboons
• Colorful butterflies
• Hornbills
• Turacos
• Numerous forest bird species

Best Time to Visit

The Sempaya Hot Springs can be visited throughout the year. However, the dry seasons from December to February and June to September provide the best walking conditions and excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography.
