Mount Sabinyo: Where Three Countries Meet

Mount Sabinyo is one of the most distinctive volcanoes in East Africa. Located in the Virunga Mountains, it lies at the meeting point of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its jagged summit, shaped by ancient volcanic activity, gives the mountain its name, often translated as “Old Man’s Teeth.”

For adventurous travelers, hiking Mount Sabinyo offers a rare opportunity to stand in three countries at once. The trail passes through lush montane forest and bamboo zones before becoming steeper near the summit, where ladders and wooden stairways help climbers navigate the rugged terrain.

The most popular ascent begins from Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. A guided hike usually takes a full day and rewards visitors with sweeping views across the volcanoes, forests, and lakes of the Albertine Rift.
