Gorilla Excursions in Africa – Rwanda & Uganda Gorilla Safari Experience

Discover the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda & Uganda. Welcome to an unforgettable journey into the heart of Africa, where mist-covered mountains, ancient forests and extraordinary wildlife come together to create one of the world’s most remarkable safari experiences.

Our Rwanda and Uganda gorilla safaris take you deep into the natural habitats of the endangered mountain gorillas, offering an intimate encounter with these magnificent primates in their protected forest environment.

Whether you are planning a short gorilla trekking excursion from Kigali, a classic Uganda gorilla safari from Entebbe or Kampala, or an extended East African adventure combining gorillas with wildlife and cultural experiences, we create tailor-made journeys designed around your interests, time, and budget.

Experience Gorilla Trekking in Africa

Gorilla trekking is much more than a wildlife activity. It is a journey through some of East Africa’s most beautiful and remote landscapes, culminating in the unforgettable moment when you come face to face with a family of mountain gorillas.

Your adventure begins with a briefing from experienced park rangers before you enter the forest in search of your assigned gorilla family. The trek can take anywhere from a few hours to most of the day depending on the location and movements of the gorillas.

Once you find the family, you will have a precious opportunity to observe them as they feed, play, groom, rest and interact naturally within their forest home. Every trek is different, and that unpredictability is part of what makes the experience so special.

Gorilla Safaris in Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Africa’s premier destinations for mountain gorilla trekking.

Located in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for its dense ancient rainforest, rich biodiversity, and large population of mountain gorillas.

The park is divided into four main trekking areas:

  • Buhoma
  • Ruhija
  • Rushaga
  • Nkuringo

Each sector offers a different atmosphere and trekking experience, with different gorilla families available for visitors to encounter.

A Uganda gorilla safari can also be combined with other outstanding wildlife destinations, including Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale Forest, Murchison Falls National Park and Lake Mburo National Park.

This makes Uganda an excellent choice for travelers who want to combine gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, Big Five wildlife and classic African safari experiences.

Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

For travelers looking for a quieter and more intimate experience, Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers another opportunity to encounter mountain gorillas. The park forms part of the greater Virunga landscape shared by Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its dramatic volcanic scenery provides a spectacular backdrop for gorilla trekking and other activities such as golden monkey tracking and volcano hiking. (Gorilla Tours Africa

Gorilla Safaris in Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park. Rwanda is one of Africa’s most celebrated gorilla trekking destinations, with Volcanoes National Park forming the center of the country’s gorilla tourism.

Located in northwestern Rwanda, the park protects a section of the Virunga Mountains and provides habitat for endangered mountain gorillas as well as golden monkeys and other forest wildlife.

One of Rwanda’s greatest advantages is accessibility. From Kigali International Airport, travelers can reach the Volcanoes National Park area in only a few hours, making Rwanda particularly attractive for short gorilla safari holidays.

A Rwanda gorilla excursion can be combined with the following:

  • Kigali city tours
  • Dian Fossey and Karisoke experiences
  • Golden monkey trekking
  • Iby’Iwacu cultural experiences
  • Lake Kivu holidays
  • Akagera wildlife safaris
  • Nyungwe Forest chimpanzee trekking and canopy walks

Uganda vs Rwanda Gorilla Trekking

Both Uganda and Rwanda offer extraordinary mountain gorilla encounters, but each destination provides a slightly different safari experience.

Uganda – Ideal for Extended Safari Adventures

Uganda is an excellent choice for travelers who want to combine gorilla trekking with a broader African safari. You can experience gorillas in Bwindi or Mgahinga and continue your journey to other national parks for chimpanzee encounters, savannah wildlife and scenic adventures. Uganda also offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, where visitors can spend substantially longer with a gorilla family as part of the habituation process.

Rwanda – Ideal for Shorter Gorilla Holidays

Rwanda is particularly convenient for travelers with limited time. Volcanoes National Park is relatively close to Kigali, allowing visitors to enjoy a gorilla trekking experience without spending several days traveling between distant destinations. Rwanda also offers excellent accommodation, smooth logistics and the opportunity to combine gorilla trekking with cultural and wildlife experiences. (Gorilla Tours Africa)

Which Destination Should You Choose?

  • More extensive safari possibilities
  • Gorilla trekking combined with Big Five wildlife
  • Chimpanzee tracking
  • Gorilla habituation
  • A wider range of accommodation options
  • A longer East African adventure

Choose Rwanda if you prefer:

  • Easy access from Kigali
  • A shorter gorilla safari
  • Volcano scenery
  • Luxury safari experiences
  • Gorilla trekking combined with cultural and primate experiences

We can also design a combined Uganda and Rwanda gorilla safari, allowing you to experience the forests and landscapes of both countries in one extraordinary journey.

What to Expect on Your Gorilla Trek

Your gorilla excursion begins early in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters. You will be assigned to a gorilla family and accompanied by experienced trackers and park rangers. Trekking through the forest may involve steep slopes, muddy trails, dense vegetation, and changing weather conditions.

The duration of the trek depends on where your assigned gorilla family is located. When you finally reach the gorillas, the atmosphere changes completely. You may find a silverback resting nearby, young gorillas playing in the vegetation, or members of the family feeding and grooming one another. You will spend a regulated period observing the family before beginning your journey back through the forest. (Gorilla Tours Africa)

Responsible Gorilla Tourism

Gorilla tourism plays an important role in protecting the remaining mountain gorillas and supporting conservation programs and surrounding communities.

By choosing a responsible gorilla safari, your journey contributes to the continued protection of these extraordinary animals while creating tourism-related opportunities for people living around the national parks. We believe that every gorilla excursion should benefit wildlife, conservation, and local communities.

Best Time for a Gorilla Safari

Gorilla trekking is possible throughout the year in both Uganda and Rwanda. However, the drier periods are generally preferred by many travellers because trekking conditions can be more manageable.

The commonly preferred periods are:

June – September

December – February

The forests remain wet environments, however, and rain can occur at any time. The possibility of rain is part of the rainforest experience and should be expected even during the drier seasons.

Perfect for travellers with limited time, these trips focus on the gorilla experience while keeping travel time to a minimum.
