Tipping Policy in East Africa

At Afoyo African Safaris, we believe every journey should be guided by respect, appreciation, and understanding of local customs. One important part of travel etiquette is knowing the tipping policy in East Africa. Tipping is not mandatory, but it’s a meaningful way to express gratitude to the guides, drivers, and hospitality staff who make your safari truly memorable.

Across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda, tipping reflects your appreciation for exceptional service. Safari guides and drivers often receive around $10–$20 per traveler per day, while camp or lodge staff may share a collective tip of $5–$10 per night. Porters, waiters, and other attendants are also grateful for small gestures that show recognition of their efforts.

We recommend offering tips in USD or local currency, given respectfully, and preferably in an envelope. Always ensure notes are clean and undamaged.

At Afoyo African Safaris, we guide our guests through these small yet important details, ensuring your travel experience remains smooth, culturally sensitive, and full of connection. By understanding the tipping policy in East Africa, you help promote fairness and appreciation within local tourism communities — leaving a positive mark long after your journey ends.
